Rudyard Kipling's "The Elephant's Child"
May 05, 2006 07:45 AM PDT
This is one of Kipling's "Just So" stories which were written more than a hundred years ago. He occassionally intentionally mispronounces words as a child might, so you may want to be available to "interpret" for the children. There is some enthusiastic spanking and a bit of retaliation in this particular story but the fourth graders I read to had absolutely no problem with it. There is also a very unfriendly crocodile so perhaps it would be better for the littlest ones if they did not listen just before bed time.

Podcast SummaryWell known and not so well known stories for your children and for those of you lucky enough to still be children at heart. About mr_hI'm a Dad (3 children), Husband, and Storyteller. In that order, really. I've been volunteering at a local elementary school for over 14 years and have been an active trained and certified Junior Great Books teacher/leader for the last 9 years. The past 4 years I have been a UIL Storytelling Competition coach for 2nd and 3rd graders and I am a charter member of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum Storyteller's Guild. My favorite story to tell is The Battle Of Midway which I tell primarily at the Bush Library but have performed other places as well. I strongly believe we need to take VERY good care of the children because they're worth it, and of course because they will be running the world when we are no longer able to.
